I have a dream. A dream that one day I will be able to run the Boston Marathon. Running a marathon is hard, but just getting to Boston is extremely difficult. I missed the qualifying time by 18 seconds three years ago and have been chasing it ever since. Since then, the times have increased so that it has become more of a challenge and only a distant goal for many. Those that qualify for Boston are just beginning on their journey. I am currently training for a marathon and know the countless hours and miles it takes to prepare. Mentally as well as physically.
This is why I am just sick about the devastation that took place yesterday. I know what it takes to get to Boston, a dream! And yet yesterday turned into a nightmare for those runners and families as chaos happened at the finish line, rather than celebration for those individuals who put so much time, effort and money into getting there. I can imagine the disappointment and sadness for those who worked so hard to run Boston. What a tragic, terrible day for everyone involved, and those of us on the sidelines!
Yet as we talked with our boys last night explaining the situation, good always comes from bad. We know from being back east when 9-11 happened that the country will be become stronger and more united from this. People will turn to God for answers and comfort when there is no where else to turn. Bostonians have reached out to the runners and as in this article, countless acts of service and kindness will follow this hard time. As with all bad, we can look for the good, pray for those involved, and hope that there are no more nightmares any time soon.
