A New Chapter

It was a sad day for me yesterday. I was released from my calling as Primary Chorister. It has been such a rewarding, enjoyable part of my life for the past 2+ years. It hasn't been challenge free, but it has been my favorite calling to date.

It's been rare in our married life that I've actually been released from a calling. We used to joke that if we didn't like a calling, we would just move. That's usually what happened, we'd just move and naturally move on to the next ward, next calling. It's hard to believe that we've been here almost 4 years and we ain't going any where. So the time has come to move on in the ward.

Any guesses where they put me? Yep, cub scouts. With three boys it is inevitable, so here we go. On to the next chapter! Khaki shirt and neckerchief here I come...

Lego Land

We've had many obsessions around here over the last 8 years. Thomas, dolphins, Bob the Builder, Wall-e, back to Thomas, dinosaurs, Club Penguin, the wii, Star Wars etc. But none have lasted as long as legos. Sometime in the fall, we order 5 lbs of legos on Ebay. 5 POUNDS OF LEGOS! The boys have not had a day without legos since then. They love them!! We have power miner legos, star wars, Indiana Jones, Christmas Countdowns and Lego Atlantis. They've made Harry Potter legos, Jacob, Benjamin and Micah lego guys and even a leprechaun this week that was pretty impressive. They just can't seem to get enough. Though I'm tired of picking up legos, it is so fun to see the creative juices flow as they build each day.

This is a lego rendition of wrestle time at our house:
If you've been to our house, you 'll recognize our green couches, the entertainment center on the left and oh look, even our pile of legos in the corner. The funny thing is that the lego floor is lego free, which is the only thing that isn't accurate. (My brother Jeff is amazed that they can have legos evenly spaced 2 inches apart over our entire family room floor!) You'll also see the boys hoovered over Phil, with one up higher, about to jump on his stomach. Nice attention to detail!!

Here's is one of Jacob's creations:
Very creative!

And here's a familiar sight:
When Phil or I hear one of the boys say, "Can you help me find a ___________?", we start to run. How are we supposed to find a little tiny piece as big as this "a" in a huge bin of legos? Who knows if it has been vacuumed up or not, and of course it's usually the next crucial piece in whatever it is they're creating.

Just so you can see what Phil and I spend our time doing, can you find this (enlarged to show detail):
in this?
Good luck!!

Life is a Video Game

Picnic weather. Finally!! Micah and I spent the fall going on picnics at various parks around town in the beautiful sunshine. He's been asking for a picnic all winter. Somehow it doesn't register that snow on the ground would not make for a good picnic. I'm not usually THAT adventurous. So today the weather was perfect for our inaugural picnic of 2010!

After Micah ate his lunch (he always does a pattern: today it was drink, orange, sandwich, cracker, repeat - such a cutie!), he headed to the playground to play. Before long I was suggesting challenges and he was passing them off with great enthusiasm. It's so funny how life is a video game to that child. Level 1: climb up the ladder and slide down the slide. Level 2: walk around the border of the playground - if you fall off, you have to start over etc. etc. It kept him busy for quite a while. Micah made it to level 11, without losing ANY lives!

What if life really IS just a video game? It seems that as soon as one challenge is overcome, a new one pops up. We again struggle and prepare to pass that level, then move on to the next. The tasks may be harder and more challenging. We often we fail, but if we're lucky, we get another chance. If we've learned from our mistakes we're able to move on to the next challenge (please don't send me back to the beginning!) Just when you think you've got it figured out, someone unlocks a new level and we're off again. I 'm just hoping I can stay away from the chain-chomps and don't drive off any cliffs.

(Phil couldn't resist videoing us playing wii at Christmas time. I thought this appropriate!)

I've bean boozled

Now, I consider myself a pretty decent cook. Though you'd never know it. The dinner time show at our house is pretty unbelievable. I feel like I have to bribe, yell, feed, say "take a bite" or "chew" a bit too often around here. Somehow we've gotten in some rotten habits and dinner is occasionally not the wonderful quality time that it is advertised to be. Our boys ARE getting better, but still not perfect.

So the other night we went to the U of U gymnastics meet. Jacob's chosen treat was a package of Jelly Belly's. Nacho ordinary Jelly Bellys. These were "Bean Boozled" jelly bellys, meaning though they make look alike, each color has 2 flavors that are totally opposite of each other and it's the luck of the draw which one you get. For example, a blue jelly bean could be either berry blue, or toothpaste. Disgusting!! I can't even imagine eating something like that, but thanks to a current interest in Harry Potter, it pleased him to find such a thing.

Trying to enjoy the meet with three little boys, I glanced down the row at Jacob who was enjoying his jelly beans. "Oh, darn. Ear wax." "I think that one was baby wipes." Are you serious? The funny thing was that on the gross ones he didn't try to spit them out, shake convulsively or make faces like those I have seen at the dinner table. He chewed and SWALLOWED the jelly belly. No one had to give him a pep talk or pour him a glass of milk to choke it down!!

Why didn't I think of that? Next time, I'll prepare lasagna, salad and breadstick JELLY BEANS. Then perhaps we can talk about our day, the weather and how much we love each other at the dinner table instead of playing "Heads or tails", or "You take a bite, I take a bite." Love it!! Or, perhaps I could just mix up some nice pencil shavings topped with skunk spray and see how that goes over. The possibilities are endless! Thank you Jelly Belly!! (I hope they are more artificially flavored than naturally!!!)
