As Benjamin's 10th birthday drew near, Jennie and I decided we had plenty of stuff,
more stuff than we needed,
more stuff than we currently have room for,
we didn't need more stuff!!!
Now, we're weak, so he managed to get some stuff anyway, but in addition we wanted to give Benjamin a memorable birthday experience.
We noticed that Ben's birthday coincided with the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival:
Ben loves stories, and he loves storytelling so it seemed to be the perfect fit.
So he and I staged an all day get away, spending Saturday up at the festival. We learned the hard way that not all storytellers are created equal. Some are much better than others, and while we were disappointed in several of the performances, the day was made by a storyteller from West Virginia, Bil Lepp and his story of "Diablo, or how I met my wife."
We laughed pretty hard. I'm a simple guy with pretty simple pleasures, one of which is seeing my children smile and watching them laugh. Bil Lepp provided several of those moments for me and made the day a success.
I can't find a clip of that story, but he has a few clips on youtube for those who might be interested:
Thanks Ben, for taking an entire Saturday away from your busy schedule of leading your posse of friends through the neighborhood so you could log some hours with your dad
Happy Birthday Ben!
(And thank you Bil!)
