Sunrise, Sunset

Sunrise, sunset

Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears
~Fiddler on the Roof

I had a reflective weekend. It started with my baby turning eight. I'm not sure how that happened, but it got me thinking. Then we went to Bear Lake (above photo) to my family reunion. Surrounded by my extended family, I felt like I should be the one cautioned to be careful instead of the one smearing sunscreen all over bodies every few hours. To see my cousins with their kids, who are also growing up, was a bit wild. It was great to sit on the beach, now that the 2nd cousins are getting a bit older, and talk, but it still feels a bit odd to be the parent in a place where I was always the kid.

I ended the weekend by visiting with 2 of my best high school friends, Angie and Sarah. I used to be the one that would come into town for too short weekends, and now I'm the only local. It was so good to be with them. It felt like a time warp as we met at Sarah's parents, who look exactly the same I might add, just like old times. A suburban still in the driveway, I expected Sarah's little brother to come out and taunt us as we walked up to the porch. He never came. Who did come were Sarah's 3 and 4 year olds, as well as baby Katie. Odd, very odd. And very cute!

I admit these events left me feeling a bit homesick. Homesick for simpler times (which of course weren't simpler at the time). Homesick for being a kid again. Homesick for old friends. Homesick for just showing up and not having to provide all the essentials. Homesick for one-on-one time with the first child. Even homesick for being the one who flies in from out of state.

Time keeps on ticking. And as much life seems to drag on some days, I know I need to enjoy each moment as much as I possibly can because these times too will pass and leave me longing for them. Laden with happiness and tears...

Wish we could have been there! It is wierd to be the parent, though. I still remember sleeping under a table as a kid because there were so many people there. Fun memories!
